Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Build a web page according to the design prototype
   • Identify the main sections of the web page layout
   • Create the web page structure
   • Position web page elements to achieve the design specification
2. Ensure web page is validated and tested in major browsers
   • Validate the cascading style sheet (CSS) against industry standards
   • Correct browser incompatibilities, using the most robust techniques
   • Test the website in various browsers
3. Ensure website is accessible
   • Check that the website is accessible, to ensure that it can be viewed
   • Check website sections, to ensure accessibility
   • Check web page elements, to ensure accessibility

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

develop a complex website layout

layout page elements to suit a variety of devices

test web pages in a variety of browsers

validate the pages against industry standards.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the principles of web site design

describe and apply the following in web site design:

hypertext markup language (HTML) and extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML)

cascading style sheet (CSS)

hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP)

techniques to correct browser incompatibilities

outline World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, and explain their application to web design.
